I have been asked to post this to see if anyone has any experience of insurance claims when an older vehicle is involved. It might well relate to one of our members in the past or indeed the future. Read on.
Recently on our club web forums, a member related the story of an
accident he had on the public highway involving his 101fc and a rental
company's Mondeo car.
The Mondeo driver crashed into the 101fc, causing minor chassis damage.
The main issue to come out of the discussion was what the insurance
company would do with the 101 if they decided to 'write it off'.
Apparently, as other owners confirmed, should the 101 be written off,
there would be no route to 'buy back' for repairing the vehicle, nor
would the 'write off' decision be in consultation with the vehicle
owner.
This idea upset the owner of the 101 enough to not claim for the repair
of his vehicle, as he could not risk seeing his 30 year old friend
crushed.
Has the ALRC or indeed any member club had experience of what insurance
companies 'standard practice' is when dealing with claims on vehicles of
this age?
We are in contact with various insurers to see what they are saying, but
value the comments from claimants actual experiences.
Best wishes,
Dave Neeson

I believe it is down to what category of write-off they declare it, on other forums people have discussed talking to the assessor to get write-offs reclassified so they can rebuild them.
A fwd reply from Terry
Dan had someone hit his old Fiesta up the rear,
When the other parties assessor came to look at the car, we agreed a contribution to the repair of Dans car rather the write it off.
We never claimed on our / my insurance.

Terry
Hi all,
Just read this post and thought I must add something.
I had a low speed prang in my Disco 300Tdi last November - lost out to a metal flat bed truck!
My insurance company wrote the car off without even inspecting it as it was "10 years + old". I pointed out that Land Rovers keep going for 60 years, but they were not interested. I requested Adrian Flux (broker) to step in and help - they did and managed to at least get the car inspected - the company still wrote it off, but I was allowed to keep it to repair it (although the payout was reduced).
Unfortunately the mechanic I gave the car to, to pull the front out & replace the bonnet is still messing me around, hence our absence in taking part this Easter. However, many thanks to the owner of the CCV who pulled my Renault Scenic out of the mud on the Saturday - I couldn't resist playing in the mud!
