From the write-up in Wetroads, I'd be surprised if anything could cross that unless it was a hovercraft!

Deano,

It is quite an easy crossing if you time it right with the tide. When we did it a couple of years ago at a spring tide low it was less than six inches deep!!

You have to watch out for the old wooden pilings though. They stick up a few inches and are difficult to see. They could easily go through a tyre.

regards
Ralph

Sounds impressive mate.

Hi, I have crossed that ford twice in each direction, first time about 25 years ago in a willys ww2 jeep, got very wet feet and problems with navigation, second time about 15 years ago in S3 and nearly lost the lot, like you say theres a lot of timber stuff in there I think it's left over from when the ferry used to ply it's trade. I had a mate who lived near the pub over the other side and it saved me about 25 minutes going to see him and caused much mirth that anyone would be so daft as to try crossing there. Dave

It's funny how a name suddenly reminds you of something from long ago.

When I was young and we lived in Essex, Hullbridge used to be one of the places Dad would take us on a summer Saturday night for a treat. Over Battlesbridge and left down Water Lane I think was the way (it used to make me laugh).
If we didn't go there we would pull up at The Bull (?) in/nr Woodham (?)

And here's a good one.
When we visited the Grandparents on a Saturday in Gt Wakering, Dad and Grandad would go up the road (to the Red Lion) 'to check how deep the snow was' laugh.gif

Nostalgia's not what it used to be!

blink.gif blink.gif dooring the waar, I was only a nipper, I lived in Woodham Ferrers and the crossing at Hullbridge was one of many play grounds for us kids .(no c3po's neccessary then Jan!) we always understood that the stakes were the remains of the bridge that gave its name to -- you geussed it. there was a time in 1947 when the river had iceberges bigger than me,but I was only lttle at the time.We could at low tide walk across ,as did the chidren before there was aschool at Woodham.Walk across ferry back. If we could do it as 7 year olds ,any rufty tufty landrover driver should have no problems, watch out for those stakes though!!! B.F.G cool.gif cool.gif

I am waiting to complete on a property next door to the Anchor pub,so maybe we could arrange a fun day at Hullbridge some time.
