Various ideas have been tabled over the years as to ways to get people to act as a marshal at an event from the stick ('You can't play until you've marshalled') and the carrot ('Help us out and we'll give you ...')

Without marshals events cannot run effectively - If we have an event without enough marshals we can either stop until someone volunteers to help out, pull all the passengers out and make them marshals or the like - none of which will be popular.

Our events are relatively low key, safe and about having a pleasant day out - we don't to become over-officious becuase that takes the fun out of it, and let's face it, most of us have enough of that sort of thing at work the rest of the time!

What do YOU think is the best way to attract people to marshal at events?

Karl.

ohmy.gif You mean apart from paying them?

This is copied from the Bures trial comments page as I got carried away on there and I didn't want to type it all again!

I know some other sports pay their marshals a token payment (£15). At least that helps to get wet, tired and cold for.

Is it really feasable in ELRC due to costs and the logistics of marshal/competitor ratio and who gets paid for marshalling? The die hards who are always there at cost to themselves? New marshals? The guys setting out the day before? Nominated regular marshals?
I am quite open to the idea of paid marshals but would it change the atmosphere of the club and would drivers pay an extra £2 - £3 to cover the cost?

I think it would help maintain the excellent safety record of the club and it may come to where we have to have nominated/named marshals in the future.
Maybe it's something we could be looking at before it becomes enforced on us in this health & safety, risk assesment, compensation culture.

I think you have a good point there. If new members can see that they can be involved in ALL sides of the club and it's not as difficult or demanding as it might seem then they will support each different level.
Riding in a CCV is a good way to show what is done at that level and a TYRO driver CAN help at an RTV or CCV trial.
Viewing canes from upside down is a hell of an introduction ohmy.gif but shows how safe the cars are and the collective responsibility of safety at the club.

Nah Peter," rotor" means gotta do it,that should'nt be what the club is about I feel that if older members can encourage newer members to join in all aspects of the club activities ,not just trialling,or greenlaning,we can all benefit, without one group doing all the work You won't know 'till you try it Fred G.
